I had some good news!
"In some ways, writing a memoir is knocking yourself out with your own fist, if it's done right." Mary Karr, in The Art of Memoir
Last September, I submitted a memoir I wrote in 2019/2020 to a publishing competition. It had been so long I thought - as so often is the case - that it had sunk without trace.
Then I received this fabulous email - I’ve been longlisted!
Dear Writers,
If you receive this email, please know your work has now been longlisted for the prize - we are now moving to the difficult step of winnowing down a superb group of submissions to a top 20 Shortlist! Feel free to withdraw if this is too long a wait and annoying, but since you are welcome to keep your entries in other contests, and this was free to enter, I hope you can be patient with us as we continue to reflect on the greatness before us! Have a wonderful summer, we will announce the shortlist in September!
kind regards, the editors
I have no idea how long a list it is, given that 20 seems like quite a long shortlist, and although it would be lovely to be shortlisted, I am not holding my breath.
But when I get around to submission time for my next novel, it’s an extra little bit to add to the query letter.
Also, I approve of the flattery from the editors. We writers need all the encouragement we can get!
Ann
